About us
Kia ora and welcome.
My name is a Tania- a proud Māori originally from Aotearoa (New Zealand), and I’ve been living in Brisbane, Australia since 2010. Moving across the Tasman brought new opportunities, but it also left me deeply missing the culture, language, and sense of community that comes so naturally back home.
As the Māori population continues to grow here in Australia, I’ve seen more of our people searching for ways to reconnect — with our whakapapa (heritage), our tikanga (customs), and with each other. That desire to stay grounded in who we are is what inspired me to begin hand-making traditional Māori performance poi.
Why I Create Poi
Poi is more than just an instrument used in performance — it’s a taonga (treasure). It carries our stories, strengthens coordination and rhythm, supports waiata (song), and connects us to generations before us. Whether performed on the marae, at kapa haka, or in community gatherings, poi brings people together.
Living away from Aotearoa, I wanted to create something tangible that helps keep our culture alive — something our tamariki (children), rangatahi (youth), and even complete beginners can pick up and feel proud to use.
Handcrafted with Purpose
Each pair of poi is carefully handmade with respect for tradition and with beginners in mind. They are:
- Balanced and easy to use
- Durable and performance-ready
- Suitable for learners of all ages
- Made with cultural authenticity and care
Whether you're just starting your poi journey or looking to reconnect with your roots, these poi are created to support you every step of the way.
Reconnecting Through Culture
For many of us living in Australia, culture can feel distant — but it doesn’t have to be. My hope is that through these handcrafted poi, we can strengthen our connection to te ao Māori (the Māori world), build community here in Brisbane and beyond, and keep our traditions thriving for the next generation.
Ngā mihi nui for supporting Māori-made, handcrafted poi and for being part of this journey of reconnection.
